Introduction
Created by the talented team at Input, Stilo is a journaling app that uses conversational AI to help you dig deeper. It gets to know you over time, draws insights and even makes book suggestions. The team launched a beta version quickly during the wave of AI-enabled apps and looked to user feedback to guide the design direction after that point.

Evaluating feedback from different kinds of users
After launch, we immediately began speaking to users about how they were using Stilo. A large portion of our users were religious, and we recieved requests for journaling guides based on the Bible. However, we also had users that were agnostic, and wouldn't have wanted to see that. Religious users didn't like seeing the option of a Tarot based guide at all, but it was incredibly popular with other user groups.

I designed a new onboarding flow that considers the users philosophies, and allows us to filter the journaling guides users see later in the experience.
Entering books is an easy way for Stilo's AI to learn about the user and provide more tailored responses right from the start.
The final step is configuring Stilo's voice; most users we spoke to weren't aware of this feature and using it drastically improved their levels of engagement once we showed it to them. Making it part of the onboarding means it is far less likely to get missed.

Onboarding doesn't stop after the sign-up flow. Our research revealed that some users weren't aware of key features like Insights or Configuring Stilo's voice. Well timed tool-tips & empty states that provide information are some of the tools I used to nudge users along at key points of their experience.
